Talking Stage – Missing Spice

She was perfect, just not …

Chuks

It is not news that people find their soul mates during NYSC orientation camp, meet their best friends, get better life opportunities, and even a whirlwind romantic affair. For Chuks, he wasn’t looking for any. He simply went to get that phase of his life over and done with.

One day, he went to the spot where he usually bought food in the Mami Market. Initially, he didn’t realize that he was sitting close to a girl because he wasn’t paying close attention. She looked very reserved, and her full attention was on her phone.

After he was done eating, another corps member brought out Ludo game and suggested they played together and he accepted. When they started playing, her attention was drawn to them and she observed the game. He won the game, and then asked her if she would like to play. She said she didn’t know how to play the game. He said he would have loved to teach her how to play, but it would take time. She didn’t mind being taught.

They ended up bonding over the Ludo game.

Even after that moment, they continued talking. They exchanged social media handles. Talked and texted. He found himself being free with her, which was something that didn’t come easy for Chuks. That evening, he received a text message saying that he wasn’t at their usual spot where they met, indicating that she was there.

It had become their spot.

He went to meet her there, but by the time he arrived, the place was full and what he wanted wasn’t available anymore. Much to Chuks’ surprise, she offered her plate to him. He wanted to pay for it, but she said that she had already paid. She insisted that Chuks must eat. He offered to reimburse her for paying for the food, but she refused.

In a society where most girls don’t believe in spending a dime on boys or doing anything for the male gender, Chuks was deeply surprised.

They went to social night together. She got mixed in the crowd. He texted her to know where she was and they reconnected. He offered his seat to her. From there, they went to the Mami Market together. Then he walked her back to her hostel before he turned and went back to his.

Think of one of those cute moments you would watch in romantic movies or read in novels.

During one of their conversations, Chuks found out that she was twenty-six years old. He was a little surprised because he had earlier mistaken her for a younger age. Meanwhile, Chuks is in his late twenties, so they were the same age group. The next day, they met up by texting each other, and when they met, she offered him some biscuits.

“Why are you giving me biscuit? Yesterday, you gave me food. Do you want to steal me?” Chuks teased her.

They spent that morning eating biscuits and bonding. Then she said she was going to the clinic to get her exit papers. Chuks was shocked. In the short time spent together, Chuks never imagined that she would be leaving the Orientation camp.

They just arrived!

She apologized for not informing him earlier. They took pictures of each other, but because there was no time, they couldn’t take a picture together. He later went to the clinic for treatment and got admitted in the male ward. She texted him to inform him that her exit letter had been issued to her, and then realization dawned on him.

“Are you just going to leave me after becoming my best friend? Can’t you go tomorrow? Why do you have to leave?” Chuks asked her.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t stay back or see him before leaving; her parents wanted her back home.

Chuks was dejected, but he still helped her in finding her way back home through Google map. Later, she texted him.

“Thank you for being helpful. I am sorry I couldn’t stay. I will make it up to you. The best thing that happened to me was meeting you. Within two days, we were already very close…”

Chuks told her that he was angry with her for not telling him that she was going to leave the camp so soon. She apologized again and said that she didn’t know that they would become very close. Still, they were together last night but she didn’t say a word. Chuks said that she had left him lonely in camp.

The next day, he went to their spot, took a picture and sent it to her, telling her that he was there but she wasn’t. She tried to cheer him up by saying that he would eventually make other friends. However, they continued texting each other every day.

Just as she said, he eventually met other friends, but he continued to send her videos of the activities going on in camp, making her wish that she hadn’t left. Nevertheless, she told him that she was going to return to the state capital for her permanent place of assignment (PPA) letter, and that she hoped to see him.

Fast forward to after the orientation camp…

She arrived at the state capital for the letter and after she was done getting it, she texted Chuks and said that she wanted to see him. Chuks told her that he didn’t have what to wear because aside from the clothes he took to camp, he didn’t have other clothes with him, and they were even unwashed. She surprisingly asked for his bank account details so that she would send him some money to buy clothes – she really wanted to see him – but he declined. It just didn’t make sense to him that she would do that. When he saw that she was very serious, he had to find a way. The truth was that Chuks had already started having reservations about starting a relationship with her, and he wanted to use that excuse as a reason not to see her, but she was resilient.

They met up at a restaurant, hugged each other, confessed that they missed each other, and talked about camp and other things for hours. When she was ready to leave, they walked hand in hand till they got to where he ordered a ride for her. They hugged again before they parted ways. Later that day, she complained about not being hugged enough even though he hugged her. It was just obvious that she craved his presence. She assured him that next time they would meet, they would hug longer and tighter. Chuks agreed.

Everything was cute between them, but Chuks began to withdraw from her.

After getting to know her, her family background, the church she was raised in (no earrings, trousers, skimpy or revealing dresses, wigs, makeup and all the other vanities; she stuck to all of them), and the fact that she was a virgin, Chuks realized that she wanted to explore the world.

He wasn’t interested in that.

Chuks is also a Christian, but she was just too decent and religious for him, and he didn’t want to be the one to expose her to all the worldliness she wanted to start exploring at twenty-six. Gradually, Chuks reduced his communication with her until she realized that he wasn’t going to push for a relationship.

For Chuks, she was amazing, no doubt. He has met many girls who feel entitled to men’s money and don’t believe in reciprocating financial gestures, but she wasn’t like that. She was a giver who would take care of her ‘man,’ she was sweet – he has never experienced something like that from any girl before – and under a different circumstance, he would have gone for her, especially as they connected so well.

She is the kind of woman every man would like to have, but just not for Chuks, and he didn’t want to start what he couldn’t keep up with or encourage her further, so he had to let her go. Even though they still talk, it is just not as it used to be. Chuks wanted a perfect combo of “goodie” and “baddie,” but unfortunately, she was one flavor.

  1. Rventually, she’ll meet someone who sees her worth and chooses her, wholeheartedly.
And maybe then Chuks will finally wake up…
Realizing he’s been carrying love for her all along but only noticed it when she walked away.
Some truths only show up after the heart’s already left.

    1. Funny how most times we know what’s best for us and we are just too stubborn to acknowledge it. I really do hope Chuks doesn’t regret his action.

  2. I’ve realized that two good people always don’t end up together.
I guess she’s too perfect for Chucks, e go jam the baddie wey e dey find and e eyes go peel😄😄😄😄

  3. All shades of girl

If you’re too churchy, it’s a problem, if you are a baddie, some intentionally don’t want to see you.
Honestly I hope we all meet the ones that complement on every level.
