Talking Stage – Love From Afar

Something just felt off…

Sarah

On this fateful day, she saw a friend request on Facebook, and without bothering to check the profile picture of this person, she accepted his friend request.

There was no mutual friend between them.

They immediately got talking because he sent her a message almost immediately after and she responded.

She was single. These things happen. Talking stage was very much allowed as long as one was not committed to someone else. What could go wrong?

A woman in a white blouse using her smartphone indoors, showing a thoughtful and calm mood.

The conversation kept going. They asked each other questions like where do you stay? What state are you from? How old are you? Are you married? What do you do for a living?…basically just getting to know each other better. The man lives in Canada, but a Nigerian. When he told her that he was forty-five years old, she was a little bit surprised because the age difference was much – she is in her twenties.

She is not married, but he happened to be a widower with two children who don’t live with him at the moment.

The moment she heard that he was a mariner, and according to him, he wouldn’t be available on social media when he is at sea, which could take months, she began to suspect that he wasn’t genuine because that was the regular job description of most Nigerian internet fraudsters (Yahoo).

But she kept going for the benefit of doubt.

Eventually, he requested for her WhatsApp number so that they could talk some more and she gave it to him. From Facebook, they proceeded to WhatsApp. The first time of chatting on WhatsApp, he called her, and they continued talking.

They only got to know each other, but he was already sounding intentional.

“I like you a lot. I want to marry you, not do this relationship thing that young ones do. I am not concerned about the age difference. I just want a woman for my children and someone that will love me for me and not my money…”

Talk about when a man knows, he knows…

All that was on the first day of communicating on WhatsApp.

The next day, they started talking again, but this time around, he wasn’t feeling good. Concerned, she asked what the problem was. He said that he had been trying to reach his mother here in Nigeria for a couple of days now, but to no avail because of the network situation in the country.

She sympathized with him, but he needed a favor.

He requested that she should help him call him mother and tell her that her son in Canada has been trying to get in touch with her but hasn’t been able to.

Usually, any other person would have thought this as a kind and harmless gesture, and gone right ahead to do it, but not her.

“Sorry, but I cannot do that,” she politely turned him down, and the conversation died there.

The reason she didn’t oblige him the “small” request was because she was very familiar with how these internet fraudsters operate. Recall that she already started suspecting that he wasn’t genuine when he said he was a marine engineer.

From her wide knowledge, she knew that her phone could easily be cloned and she could be robbed from there, being that these internet fraudsters have developed diverse and unsuspecting means of scamming vulnerable and ignorant people, especially women, off their hard earned money.

Anyway, he didn’t speak to her for about four days.

On the fourth day, she texted him to know why he suddenly stopped talking to her. In his defense, he said that he asked her for a small favor but she turned him down without consideration; that could only mean that she doesn’t love him.

She insisted that it wasn’t ideal to ask her to call his mum, being that they only got to know each other, and he said “okay.”

A few days later, she reached out again by calling him on WhatsApp just to confirm her suspicions. This time around, he acted as though he was having a bad network.

Oh, but she already knew that “format” all too well.

She blocked him and deleted his number and chat and moved on from there.

She knew without a doubt that she had dodged a bullet because he was certainly one of those Yahoo boys trying to steal from their client. He might not have asked her for money, which might have been their usual way of operation for years, but one display of kindness could be used to steal from her, and she was trying to avoid it as best as possible. He proved to her that he wasn’t genuine by ghosting her the moment he realized that she wasn’t one of those gullible and “nice” ones.

For her, it was one talking stage that ended even before it begun.

Do you think she might have been wrong in her judgment and missed what seemed like a walk down the aisle to happily ever after?

  1. The gentleman could have been sincere with his intentions, probably not a fraudster, but then, any lady would have suspected the opposite of who the gentleman truly is. But I think she did the right thing, true love does not come from one man, so??

  2. A guy you just started talking to asking you to call his mum is not “small favor” energy that’s forced intimacy. That kind of move is usually about control, testing boundaries, or emotional manipulation. When someone you barely know tries to fast-track closeness, that’s a red flag wearing native attire and blowing a whistle jare.

Secondly, Whether he was truly a Yahoo boy or not, one thing is clear: he was not genuine. A sincere person trying to build something real would explain himself properly, not disappear because you didn’t play along.

  3. Sometimes this wide knowledge can make one overthink things that are not true… it might have been something, who knows!! A dodged bullet or a missed chance at bliss

  4. Honestly, the lady was very nice to have texted back. She saved herself a whole lot of trouble so she wasn’t wrong in any way.

She wasn’t wrong in her judgment because she has seen some of the red flags already. A person who is genuine doesn’t disappear the moment they realize they can’t manipulate or benefit from someone.

  6. FESTUS AUDU DANLADI

She followed her instinct and that’s the best decision she. A lot if people fall prey because they don’t follow their instincts

  7. She dodged a real bullet o. He wants to marry her for his children and he doesn’t want someone who would love him bcos of his money… Lol
Why can’t he reach out to any of his relatives to help him call his mum? Thank God the lady used her sense, if not you go cry wetin no good
