Penny Less

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” but I think we forgot to negotiate with life on the specific number of lemons to throw at us at a time, because sometimes, one is rarely done making lemonade with the lemons thrown at him or her, and another bowl of lemons is given.

Oftentimes, without warning, and definitely without consent.

A young girl, who has been out of job since the beginning of the year, already suffering from the sadness of being broke and trying to find her bearing again, was asked to assist her sister in her POS (Point of Sale) business because her sister was indisposed. Aside from that, she was also saving up some money gradually to get herself a new phone since her phone got spoilt, and she had been able to save up half of the cost of the phone she wanted to buy. She guarded the money jealously, refusing to spend from it, because she had a target.

Little did she know that money was a fleeting resource.

Every morning, she would pick up her sister’s bag containing thousands of naira for the day’s transaction, the machine, and would go to her sister’s business stand, which was by the road.

Woman using a money counter to count US dollar bills on a table.

Every day, she got to attend to many customers, male and female, old and young, and everything was going smoothly for her until that fateful day some weeks ago. In a day, at least, she attends to over twenty customers who show up for all forms of money transactions.

She arrived at her sister’s business stand as usual and attended to people who came to either withdraw money, deposit money, or make a transfer. A man, whom she hadn’t seen around before, walked up to her and requested to withdraw the sum of thirty-four thousand naira from her. She didn’t think much of it, because it was a roadside business and a lot of new faces were bound to show up on some days. After transferring the money to her and showing her that it had been successful, she counted thirty-four thousand naira in cash and gave it to him, and he left.

A few minutes later, when she was putting the transactions on record, she realized that the thirty-four thousand naira alert wasn’t there. At first, she told herself not to panic, because sometimes, it could be as a result of network issues, but by the end of the business day, she still didn’t see it.

There was nothing.

Then she became worried.

She knew that she would have to give account for the day’s business and the money would definitely be asked about, so she quickly called her brother and narrated her predicament to him. He had access to check the transactions with his phone. On rare occasions where there were issues of whatever transaction failure or delay, he would check to confirm if such transactions had been made. That would help them know what next step of action to take.

He told her not to panic; it was probably one of those issues where the money entered the account but she didn’t get the alert.

He checked from his end and discovered that no such transaction was ever made.

How it happened, they both couldn’t tell, but it wasn’t a story that she could tell to her sister, the owner of the business. Out of fear and deep regret, she had to take from her saved up phone-money to refund the money lost.

Till now, she hasn’t set eyes on the man and her money was gone.

It was a huge loss to her, and it made her deeply sad, because in the midst of everything she was passing through, she still had to deal with that. This was an amount of money that took her a lot to save because of her current jobless situation.

There was no way to trace it or even report the situation. Just like that, it was gone into thin air!

She is still mourning the painful and tragic loss of her hard-saved money.

The money might seem like a small amount of money, but if you were in her shoes, how would you feel?

  1. So sad…. 😔😔😔
    I would have cried o… 😭😭😭
But the man sha, I’m very sure he knows that the money didn’t go through or probably it was reversed…. To see good people nowadays is by connection o.

My advice to her is, next time she should make sure she gets the alert before a customer leaves to save her from any kind of losses.

  2. The feeling is very painful. Most expecially when you have to use your own savings which you are saving for another project to replace the money. This is a big lessons for every POS agent to be extra careful out there and confirm transfer in the account not just by recieving alert. Which obviously even alert can be fake.

  3. This kind of thing can be painful eh. She should have told her sister before replacing the money, who knows her sister might just let it go without asking her to pay back.

  4. This is the kind of thing that can make you question your intelligence😂 you’ll keep thinking about what you could av done differently.

  6. I feel really sorry for her.
Anybody can fall for these scams ( POS, fake transfer alerts, crypto scam, even giving your bank details to a scammer). Everybody should be careful and always check your bank apps to confirm every transaction, also be careful with which sites/apps you submit your bank’s login details on. The fake looks very similar to the original. Just be careful.

  7. Very sad. People can be deceitful. We just pray evil doesn’t come our way and we really have to be careful about these things
