Bad Reconnection

Some days, just out of the blues, an old friend can resurface, and all the years apart might not matter much, or they might, actually…

One fateful day, young Miss Dee received a message on WhatsApp from an old friend whom she lost contact with. She was surprised to have heard from him after all these years, but then he came up with the tale of crossing deep oceans and going through fire just to get her phone number, making her even more surprised. Not that she believed the story of how he got her number, but she just felt like reconnecting with him wasn’t a bad idea.

They began to have long chats and sometimes, video calls; after years of being out of touch, there definitely would be a lot to catch up on. When he began to bring up the love talk (he had asked her out for a long time years back but she kept declining), she asked if he wasn’t in a relationship, and he said he was very much single, even though Miss Dee already noticed that he and one particular lady on Facebook were constantly being endearing to each other in his posts. Anyway, during most of their conversations, he yapped about where he worked, how much he was being paid, house that he bought; with pictures, and every other thing he could possibly brag about.

This same person told Miss Dee one morning that he forgot his wallet at home and he needed her assistance with money for transportation from work. Miss Dee gave him the amount he requested on the agreement that it was a loan, not a free gift, and he agreed to pay back as soon as possible.

Anyway, as the friendship progressed and they spent ample amount of time talking, Miss Dee noticed that a lot had quite changed about him over the years. Back then, he was just a cool guy with no issues at all, but now, he was a completely different person. During their conversations, he constantly talked down on women, said things like women were only after men’s money, and he was very disgusted with the fact that women expected things from men like opening doors, drawing out chairs, serving breakfast in bed, cooking or participating in house chores, and any woman who dressed too much or applied makeup was a no for him…to mention but a few. She was irked when he even requested nude pictures from her at a certain point.

Miss Dee was shocked; this wasn’t the person she knew years ago, but none of that prepared her for what was to come.

Miss Dee’s had some difficulties with her laptop settings which she had intended to take to the cyber-café to sort out, but since they were always talking, she brought up the topic, and he offered to get it done for her for free…but on one condition; he would have sex with her. Miss Dee immediately turned him down and went back to her initial plan of taking it to professionals to get it fixed. This infuriated him, and he began to throw insults at Miss Dee, calling her sorts of names including ugly.

He became a knight in shining monster.

Nevertheless, all Miss Dee wanted was to get paid the money that she loaned him, but even as she talked about the money with him, he seemed to ignore it, as the only thing he cared about was raining insults on her in long paragraphs and chats. He was like a “typewriter”, because in less than two minutes, he would have dropped a full length message for her, all filled with derogatory words and insults, simply because she turned down him. When Miss Dee realized that he had no intentions of paying her back the money, she refused to allow him win on all sides, so she decided to take matters into her own hands.

Miss Dee went on Facebook and sent his siblings messages, asking them to order him to pay him. When that did not seem to be working, Miss Dee sent the lady he was being cozy with on Facebook a message, and from there, a lot more was revealed about him. This lady affirmed that they were in a relationship. In fact, they had been dating for over five years. When Miss Dee told her about all the things she experienced with him in just a couple of weeks after reconnecting with snapshots of their chats as evidence, she also affirmed that they were true, because he exhibits all those attributes to her, and that in fact, he had moved onto her cousin in likewise manner. Also, she debunked all his claims of having a real job and buying a house; he was still jobless and the house he showed Miss Dee in a picture wasn’t his. She went on to tell Miss Dee about his narcissistic and misogynistic behaviors in all the years they had been together, and Miss Dee could not help but wonder why she was still in the relationship.

This guy denies her, obviously, has made sexual advances to her cousin, doesn’t respect or treat her like a proper lady should be treated by a real man, and yet, she was still with him.

Anyway, after all these measures, Miss Dee eventually got her money back. Apparently, he had been forced to do the needful, and afterwards, she blocked him everywhere, but it did not end there.

His girlfriend then told Miss Dee that she confronted him about what Miss Dee told her, and he changed the narrative, claiming that it was Miss Dee who wanted a relationship with him, and when he turned her down, she became paranoid and began to act crazy. The most shocking part was that this guy took his time and created a whole different chat that fit into his narrative for his girlfriend, just to prove that he wasn’t the lying person.

Miss Dee could hardly get over the shock of it as she had never experienced anything like this before, which made her wish that they never reconnected. Anyway, after all said and done, Miss Dee also gave his girlfriend, who had stories to tell about this guy but wouldn’t leave the relationship, some space for her own peace and sanity.
