Episode Three…
It might not be giving Vera all the butterflies that she had hoped in a relationship, but it did not stop her from preparing to visit Chidi with high expectations after they had made arrangements for her to come over. It would be the very first time that Vera and Chidi would be in a private space together. All the time since they got to know each other, and the beginning of their relationship, they had never been alone together, hence, no opportunity for wandering hands and body as is common with lovers, especially young ones.
So Vera gave it her best shot as she dressed well, took time to make herself extra pleasing and presentable, because like it or not, she was visiting her boyfriend, whom she was certain anticipated her visitation even more, for the first time.
When Vera arrived at Chidi’s house, they got talking and as we already know, Chidi never ran out of what to say, but while they talked, Chidi took Vera’s hand in his, holding it tenderly. To him, this was his most valuable possession; one that took eternity to win. As Vera’s hand rested in Chidi’s palms, she noticed that they were wet. Vera wondered why someone who wasn’t a child would be having wet palms, but in as much as it troubled her mind, she did not mention it to Chidi, but something in her died for him in that instant.
The visitation did not turn out as Vera had envisioned that it would, and this was primarily because she discovered that Chidi had wet palms which she hadn’t noticed before now. She wasn’t madly in love with him, but the little feelings Chidi had been able to build in Vera’s heart collapsed instantly.
Anyway, after the visitation, Vera started to pull back. However, Chidi did not notice a change in Vera’s actions towards him as he was too blinded by love to read the signs. Then the last straw for Vera happened when Chidi paid her a visit again, like he always did before. This time around, Vera was very sensitive about his body, and that was what opened her eyes to the realization that Chidi’s feet were also wet. How she never noticed them before was a mystery, but now that she had, she just could not stand it. Vera could manage a constantly moving mouth, but wet palms and feet, she could not deal. Try as she did, she realized that it was not something she could overlook.
After that day, without explaining to Chidi or even asking him questions regarding what she noticed in his body, Vera ended the relationship. All plans by Chidi to work his way back into her heart failed woefully as Vera’s mind was already made up.
Chidi was a good guy. He was loving and caring, and his attention never wavered, but he just had to have wet palms and feet, and that for Vera is a deal-breaker. And so that was how Chidi’s reign in Vera’s life came to an abrupt end, because after that, communication between them dwindled, and Chidi eventually realized also that he would have to move on with his life.
