The Ultimate Prize

In life, women have different things that they see as the ultimate achievement. For some, it is getting a degree, or building a career/brand, or travelling the world, hitting the Guinness Book of Record, while for some others, bagging a husband. Most of these women, once they are able to achieve this ultimate life goal, every other woman who hasn’t done so in that particular area is either lacking something, or has failed in life.

Miss D, while waiting to get a bike to take her home after the close of work, saw her secondary school classmate pass her by as though she did not see her. Not wanting to embarrass herself by being the first to say hi, Miss D let her walk past her. To be sure that this secondary school classmate of hers recognized her, Miss D kept her eyes on her, and truly, this lady turned back after she had gone a few feet ahead which only goes to say that she also recognized Miss D, but did not see the need to stop and say hi to her.

Anyway, weeks flew by and Miss D had completely moved on from that episode, but fate brought them together again when Miss D was waiting to board a bike home after the close of work. This time around, this secondary school classmate was the first to call Miss D’s attention to her, because she hadn’t seen her initially.

They exchanged pleasantries, and she went straight to ask Miss D, saying, “Are you still single?”

Miss D did not think much of it, even though it was an inappropriate question, considering the fact that they had been out of touch since after secondary school, she pretended not to have seen her the last time their paths crossed, and they hadn’t really done enough catching up. Anyway, Miss D responded and told her, “Yes, I am.”

Then the secondary school classmate said, “Oh, this is my husband,” while drawing Miss D’s attention to a man standing close to her. Apparently, they had just gotten married the previous Saturday (which means when their paths crossed few weeks ago and she completely pretended not to have seen Miss D, she was still unmarried), and they were on their way to the market to get household appliances.

Miss D congratulated her, and the next words that came out of the mouth of the secondary school classmates were, “The Lord will perfect yours for you,” before walking away with her husband. She did not see the need to say hi to Miss D when she hadn’t yet tied the knot, and as fate would have it, she was given a chance to subtly throw shade at her secondary school classmate.

If you were in Miss D’s position, what would you have done; say amen to her mocking prayer, give her a response that would keep her awake and thinking about her life’s decisions for many nights, or simply ignore her completely?

  1. I totally have been Miss D, it doesn’t even help that my name starts with a D. Look, I’m very happily single 😌and very established by myself a man is only an advantage and it takes security to know that I will pray my own prayer for her, she fit no like the prayer sha. Omoradarada

I would have said amen if i was Miss D… However, it is pertinent to state that there is nothing to be ashamed of in circumstances that are beyond human control. It is God that blesses people with spouses and not man. And the fact that one has not being blessed with one does not mean he is never going to get married, it only means it is not yet time.

  3. I’ve been miss D severally, just few days ago I was on phone with a friend we met during service. And she was like she’s getting married, after congratulating her Aunty went ahead and said you’re next in line… I just ignored her because do you even know if I’m in a relationship to begin with???? 🤔🤔🤔

  4. I would say give her food for thought, but people like that, they won’t feel it so it’s probably best you let her carry her prized possession and leave!
