Narrow Escape!

A young mother of two children was doing her Master’s program and also learning fashion designing a few years back, all sponsored by her husband, but being an industrious woman who wanted to own something for herself, stumbled on a business venture on Facebook that entailed receiving goods and selling to get enormous gain.

It was an online business with branches and promises of a massive return; exactly what she was looking for. She chatted with the owner of the business who not only convinced her about the success of the business, but also opened her eyes to diverse possibilities that could come from venturing into it.

She was bought hook, line and sinker.

The woman then told her that she would have to bring in a certain amount of money before the goods would be shipped over to her. She spoke to her husband about it, but he turned her down. He explained to her that the business did not sit well with him, and advised her not to involve herself in it. People these days, especially the ones on social media whom you have never met or seen cannot be trusted.

However, she wanted to do the business desperately, and seeing that her husband had kicked against it, she did not mention it to him again.

Then she began to make urgent calls to people she was acquainted with, asking them to loan her money; any amount they could raise up, with promises to pay back at a certain time as soon as she starts to receive some returns. She borrowed money from every Seun, Husseina and Chisom in her life just to raise the money. When she was able to raise more than forty thousand naira, she sent it to the woman on Facebook.

Instantly, the woman blocked her.

She became restless, especially as she had borrowed money from a lot of people. The date she promised to pay back arrived, but she could not meet up her promise, because she had been scammed. One of the persons who loaned her some part of the money called her husband to report the issue to him. Her husband became very livid with her. He scolded her thoroughly for going behind him to do exactly what he asked her not to, and now she has landed them in a state of debt and embarrassment. He was even angrier at her desperation to start up a business for herself, because he made sure that he provided everything she needed, including sending her to do her Master’s program and also enrolling her in a fashion class.

What more could she possibly be looking for out there? Wouldn’t she get to do a business in fashion designing or get a better job after successfully completing these programs? He could not understand her desperate need to ‘get something doing.

To save them from being harassed by her debtors, he started to pay back all the money she borrowed, to everyone she collected money from. He was so upset that he grounded her completely; seized her phone and sim card, blocked her account, collected her car key and restricted her from social media entirely, stopped her from dropping off and going to pick up their kids from school or anywhere for that matter. He also replaced her smart phone with a small phone and a new sim card with which she would be using to communicate with her close family members only.

Then he crowned it up with silent treatment.

She became bothered, sad and depressed, and she would soak herself in tears every single day after everyone had gone out of the house. Then one day, she decided to end it all. That morning, after her husband had dropped off the kids and gone to work, she sent him a text message saying he would return home to her dead body, because she was tired of the punishment she was getting from him. Her husband who had already gotten to work immediately called their kids’ proprietress and begged the woman to hurry to their home before things would get out of hand. Getting to the house, the proprietress discovered that she had locked the gate from inside the house. She had to seek the help of other people to be able to get into the house. Meanwhile, this young mother had already taken snipper and foaming in the mouth inside the house.

They quickly rushed her to the hospital, and fortunately, she survived it.

Her husband on the other hand, decided that he was not going to take chances and let someone’s daughter die in his hands, so after she was discharged from the hospital, he carried her everywhere he went, including his workplace just to keep an eye on her.

It was not until she recovered fully and became emotionally and mentally well that her husband stopped watching her like a hawk and babysitting her, and got her life back together again.

  1. I think the husband should have allowed her do what will make her happy and the punishment he gave her was too much, she is his wife not his sister or daughter !

  2. I believe they is a saying “Two become one”in marriage…She was wrong to go behind her husband, But I guess the need to become independent was the reason behind her actions.

The punishment was too extreme, everyone is bound to make mistakes at some point..but at that point he felt she needed some kind of punishment but it went too far

  3. The woman was actually wrong for her to disobey her husband and the husband went too extreme with his punishment.. he could have been lenient with the punishment.

A narrow escape indeed. I know she is wrong for going behind his back and also putting them into debt but silent treatment is the worse you can give to anybody, it makes one feel worthless.I hope they both learn from this.

The lady got it wrong by trusting the online vendor. Not all online vendors can be trusted, some are just looking for innocent souls that will fall victim for their trap which she did. Nevertheless, the husband shouldn’t have taken it soo personal by seizing her smart phone and the rest.

    Depression dey kill.

  6. I feel both parties had their own fault. The wife shouldn’t have borrowed just to start a business and the punishment the husband gave her was too extreme. In marriage, communication and understanding is key. The lack of both can lead to catastrophe

Desperation is a killer and depression is a killer too. But one sincere way to live long is listening to wise counsel. The average Nigerian will say “follow who know road”.

In a nutshell, what I am trying to say is that the woman who narrowly escaped death should have listened to her husband when he advised her against the social media influencer
