A Love Choice

Two young adults met in church in January 2017, and by August of that same year, they both began a journey of love, friendship and companionship. They were both students in the university at that time. And as the years went by, their love for each other blossomed and deepened. It became crystal clear to these lovers where the relationship was headed for them: a lifetime of togetherness in love and happiness.

He was everything she could ever desire in a partner, and more. He was faithful, loving, caring, loyal, honest, and very supportive. Even in a time when she battled with grief from the loss of her mother, he stood by her and became her solace. What they had wasn’t perfect, but it was blissful, beautiful and worth fighting for. They finished school, served as youth corps members and secured a job. Life for them looked like it was playing in their favor.

But just like every good relationship, the storm will surely come to test their love.

Sometime last year in 2023, her elder brother and his wife who reside in the United States suggested that she joined them abroad for her Masters degree. Although a platter of gold opportunity, she began to worry about what her relocation to the United States would do to their relationship. Leaving Nigeria at that time meant separation from the love of her life, and she could not imagine it, especially after years of love, loyalty, efforts that he has put into the relationship. What eventually took her completely off balance about the offer was when her brother’s wife insisted that she kept her travel plans a secret from her man.

How can she keep such a thing away from someone like him? Was she supposed to just pack her bags and travel abroad without his knowing? What kind of partner would that make her? How did they expect her to hurt someone who has done nothing but love and support her for years?

She became suspicious of this arrangement by her brother’s wife, who was being backed up by her other older brothers, and so she stood her ground and turned down their juicy offer. However, her refusal to travel to the United States was met with harsh reactions. Being the last and only girl of older brothers, they turned their backs on her. Even her brother’s wife proposed to place a bet on her man; she would send him to an African country, that she was sure he would never call her again.

All that pressure and disrespectful insinuation did not make her change her mind about refusing to travel. She stood her ground for the one her heart truly beats for. At this insistence, one of her elder brothers called her man and asked him to sign an agreement that he will be able to take care of her, because they all felt that he had influenced her decision not to travel abroad.

Contrary to their belief, it was their outrageous suggestion not to mention her plans to him that made her suspicious of their offer, and eventually turn it down. When things got more heated between her brothers and her, her Uncles had to intervene. She is an adult, and should be allowed to make her own decisions without forcing theirs down her throat. Also, she is in a happy place with the man she genuinely loves and loves her just as much, or more, and has even shown her in more ways than one why he does not deserve to be treated in such a way.

They had to back down.

Having fought and won to save her relationship, the happy couple will be tying the knot soonest, all preparations in progress!
