One fine day in the second week of February, 2024, a young unmarried man who happened to be a citizen of Abuja walked up to a petrol seller in a community in Abuja and bought petrol worth 5litres, and he poured it in two large bottles for his buyer. However, after the petrol seller sold the petrol to him, he continued ‘gisting’ with those around him. Unknown to him, this buyer had moved a few feet away from his petrol stand and begun to gulp one of the bottles of petrol down his throat.
It was another customer who drew his attention to the young man gulping down petrol like it was a pack of orange juice. Immediately, the petrol seller rushed to the young man and tried to take the bottle away from him, but the man was also quick enough to land him a slap across his face. While the petrol seller was trying to recover from the hot slap, the young man took the other large bottle of petrol and emptied the content on himself.
Before the seller could make another attempt at stopping this young man from his actions, he lit a match and set himself ablaze. Unfortunately for the petrol seller, some part of his hand was caught in the fire when he tried to stop him. Anyway, nothing much could be done to save him as no one could get close to a burning human, and before the fire could be put out, he was already badly burnt and dead.
A lot of people in the neighbourhood who knew him could not fathom why the young man would take his life in such a cruel and excruciating way. He had rented apartments he was collecting rents from. He was a landlord, so technically the economy shouldn’t have been too harsh on him to take his own life. Even his family members have no clue as to why he did what he did. There was no note, no complaining prior to the tragic incident, no sulking, no gloomy demeanor. Nothing.
The question of why he did it still hangs in the air.

It never is.
The temptation to say ‘village people’ keeps coming to my head😂.
Well, no body knows.
It could have been clinical depression or the any mental illness because in reality clinical depression is limited to those who have financial struggles.
Hmmmm…
It could be heart break 💔💔💔💔, people respond to it differently 🤷🤷🤷
And what people don’t know is that talking about it helps. Bottling emotions is terrible…because nobody could even guess the reason for such rash decision.

He is the only one that can tell what he was going through before he took that decision. Some people are just putting on a smiling face, they are really going through a lot.
But suicide is never an option.
And unfortunately, he’s no more to tell us why.
Depression is indeed a real thing……. but no matter what suicide is never an option.

Some people can’t handle pain or grief or loss, and it’s just sad.
This is sad. Only he knows what caused that but unfortunately we can’t know now, can we?
We can’t…we can only guess.
Learning to control our emotions should be among the things we learn as we grow older and learning to walk away from a company that suck away our joy.
The economy is hard and depression is real but suicide should never be an option.

I guess he was depressed or was facing potential blackmail, it’s crucial to encourage anyone experiencing depression to reach out to people or explore activities they love.
Reach out. Don’t bottle anything inside. Now the family is shocked and clueless.
It’s so sad he died that way , maybe he was depressed and didn’t have the courage to talk to someone without being judged. Suicide is still not the best option….
It’s true. Another angle is that sometimes, we don’t even provide a conducive environment or space for people to be able to open up without being judged or bashed.
